From my friend Ray
It's about as retarded as us having to pay a "use tax" once we complete our aircraft and put an N number to them. As stated before, it is only a way to f**k us in another position and get away with it, as well as doing away with having to pay air traffic controller salaries, and pensions, and health care benefits. In my years of experience, our ATC system has worked just fine.. even without ADS-Bullship equipped planes.
But without ADS-B mandated, they'll never be able to force us to co-exist with UAVs so that someone else can line their pockets with money. I forsee changes to the sectional charts showing UAV routes, just like they show military training routes now. Only there will be so frickin many of them, it'll take even more of the fun out of personal flying.. and we'll sit back and say, "Son, I remember when we REALLY had the freedom to just pick up and fly any 'ole place at any 'ole time...." I used the EAA process to send letters to my representatives, quick and simple.
I read the controller's union had signed on to support the privatization. That really surprised me. They must be going to get a good "reward" somewhere down the road. I was working for the FSS when it went to Lockheed, and we fought it hard but it was already a done deal.
