I'm getting ready to order the aluminum sheet for my instrument panel. What alloy alumium do I use and what thickness?

6061-T6 is naturally corrosion resistant . 2024-T3 has better strength to weight is better for primary structure but must be protected from corrosion. In a nonstructural application like an instrument panel 6061-T6 is more than adiquit and easier to work with.

I built my replacement out of .060 2024-T3; originally it was .125 and had to support gyros and a 2# CHT gage. I have seen factory planes with .040 thru .125.

My replacement is a wrap around, like a Model 12 Pitts. It is easy on the focus adds a little stiffness.
